Ulster 3D Championships

Over 50 archers representing 11 clubs from NI and Ireland braved the bitter cold North wind but glorious sunshine on Sunday 6th November to shoot in the unique 3d Ulster Championships hosted by Banbridge Archery Club.

In previous years, the interest for this discipline has been in decline. However, the numbers of archers who flocked to Gilford Castle Estate prove that excitement is returning and every archer who shot was treated to the awesome spectacle of the Autumn colours and the fun of shooting the elusive 3d animals.

3D archery is foam animal replicas, with scoring zones awarded to certain kill and wound areas of the animals. Animals are then placed in the wooded grounds as they would appear in nature. Archers shoot two arrows for points, animals are placed at distances ranging from 5-45m and all distances are unknown to the archers. One of the most difficult skills in 3D is knowing how far away the animals are from your shooting peg. Therefore, gauging the correct distance helps enormously to the potential of attaining a good score.

In preparation for next year’s World 3D Championships in Italy archers hoping to qualify for Team GB and represent Great Britain got to practice their shooting and field craft skills that are so important at international level. Later next year, archers from all over the UK will get the chance to qualify for these unique games at the only selection shoot held in Pentref Wales. The popularity of this shoot will have helped NI archers and 3D animals at Gilford may be a regular fixture for Banbridge Archery Club.
